Houston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club Instructors

Prof. Art Alvarado has over 19 years of combined experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling. He started his martial arts training when he wrestled for Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe Springs, California. He began training at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, California in September 1994 after he witnessed Royce Gracie submit Kimo Leopoldo in UFC 3 with an armlock. The Gracie Academy was owned by Rorion Gracie the creator of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. There he had the privilege of training with Rorion, Royce, Rolker, Robin, and Grandmaster Helio Gracie. It was also there that he met and trained with Master Caique Elias. Grandmaster Helio Gracie considered Master Caique the most technical student outside of his sons! Shortly after receiving his blue belt Prof. Art entered into the Instructor Program. On top of his regular training, he had to attend separate classes on how to be an instructor. On many occasions Prof. Art had to teach practice classes in front of Royce, Rorion, Grandmaster Helio and the other instructors! The idea is that just because you're a tough fighter/competitor doesn't make you a good instructor. By being in the instructor program you had to know all aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Sport, Self-Defense, and Vale-Tudo (No-Rules)! Prof. Art moved to Houston in the summer of 2000 and is now the official representative for Team Caique. He is eager and ready to teach anyone who is sincere in learning the art that changed his life: Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Master Carlos "Caique" Elias - Certified Red/Black Belt
His name is Master Carlos Henrique Elias, or Master "Caique" as he is known in the BJJ world. He is a Red/Black Belt under Grandmaster Helio Gracie. Prof. Caique is one of the few Black Belts from the original Gracie Academy in Brazil. This was at the time Helio Gracie and his sons were all together in the same academy. Master Caique was the best student there for many years. This was the main reason why Master Caique was chosen to teach at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, California. He was invited from Brazil to teach the classes while Royce was preparing for his fights. Master Caique brought not only his vast knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but his knowledge of the preparation it takes to become a champion. Although Master Caique is from the "old-school" his jiu-jitsu is anything but. His jiu-jitsu game has evolved with the times. As now it is much more crucial to have a complete jiu-jitsu game with leg attacks, neck cranks, etc. Master Caique now has his own academy in Lomita, California and has affiliates all over the United States.
